In April I’ll be speaking at the Rationalist International Conference alongside Maryam Namazie, Taslima Nasreen, Sanal Edamaruku, Michael Nugent, David Silverman, and a host of other critical thinkers and secularists from across the globe. My presentation is entitled Formal and Informal Blasphemy, and I’ll be discussing what we can learn from the sociological theory of deviance with respect to our quest to protect and foster free speech and other key human rights that blasphemy and religious insult laws infringe upon. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What is Religion?
- What is Blasphemy?
- What is meant by ‘formal blasphemy’?
- What is meant by ‘informal blasphemy’?
- What challenges do proponents of free speech face in western democracies?
- What strategies can secularists living in secular democracies employ to create, maintain and protect free speech across the globe?
I hope to see you there.
